I will tell you right off the bat that you do not need to be brilliant to get into Drexel. I went to an extremely competitive high school in New Jersey where I was mostly active in the band program. My activities beyond band included a couple years on the swim team, a stint on the robotics team, and a run in the school musical. I was not the most active of students. As far as grades are concerned I was mostly an A-B student with the occasional “C”. My final HS GPA was a 3.32 and I graduated with a weighted rank of 134th in a class of over 500 (gives you an idea of how competitive my school was). My SAT score was 1260 (630/630). I was a member of the National Honor Society and graduated with honors. My father also attended Drexel University so I had the advantage of being the child of an alumnus. Because Drexel has rolling admission I applied in early December of my senior year. I received my acceptance letter before Christmas, as well as applications for both the AJ Drexel Scholarship Award, which subtracted $6500.00 from my yearly tuition, and the Drexel Honors Program. Now for the recommendations – As I said before you don’t need to be brilliant to get into Drexel. Average grades and adequate school activities will probably be enough, however if you are considering Drexel, you may already know what kind of field you are hoping to enter. Showing some self-motivated activities in that field, not to mention the ability to manage school and a job are also big pluses considering Drexel’s emphasis on the co-op program. Those applying to more advanced tech schools like MIT or Carnegie Mellon may want to use Drexel as a backup. Overall, if you are an average student whose application shows that you are a well-rounded and driven individual, you should have no problem getting into Drexel.
